An alleged New People’s Army (NPA) attack happened at around 2:00 AM at the Lapinig Municipal Police Station in Northern Samar last August 10, Friday.
Two police officers are reportedly wounded and injured after the encounter, namely PO2 Jerry Quilecol and PO1 Edizon Aguere.
According to the reports of the officers on duty that time, around 50 to 100 alleged NPA members ambushed the police station. The suspects arrived riding trucks and motorcycles.
The suspects are said to have rained bullets on the scene. The incident was described as a looting and shooting rampage. Glasses were broken, and things were thrashed around the station.
The encounter lasted for 15 minutes after which, the armed suspects fled the scene carrying several firearms, ammunitions and magazines, laptop, desktop, and a phone from that they rummage from the police station. The police will center the investigation and search through the looted items.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, Director General Oscar Albayalde is currently holding an investigation about the incident.
In addition to that, the commander in charge of Lapinig will be held liable for the lack of Intelligence information regarding the encounter.
According to the 8th Infantry Division spokesperson, Army Captain Francis Agno, they are still investigating whether this attack is related to the recently apprehended NPA Commander Marieta “Tayang” Bartolo. Tayang was the secretary of the NPA unit in Northern Samar.
Chief Albayalde ordered ground troops to hunt down the alleged NPA members.
PNP spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Benigno Durana, Jr., responded that the police maneuver units were already deployed and set for the manhunt around Eastern Visayas.
They believe that the actual target of the group is the Lapinig Municipal Hall in which the chief ordered an increase in the security parameter around the area.
Durana said that the checkpoints have been intensified. He added that an ‘all point’ bulletin has been raised in the entire island of Samar to intercept the fleeing group.
Reinforcement units around the town of Lapinig is also set to deploy to ensure the citizens’ safety in case the armed suspects return.
Chief Albayalde advised the authorities to always be ready and every station has to have a Camp Security Plan for surprise encounters like this, especially in places infiltrated with rebels.
