Humans, being the highest and rational kind of mammal are said to be the steward of the place that God has given us, we are expected to take care and preserve our environment for the benefit of all people and the coming generation who will be the future stewards of this land.
The maintenance of our environment is made easier through the help of local and national government who regulates the implementation of rules that will make sure our surroundings are clean and safe to live in.
But sometimes regardless of the local government’s waste management programs, some Filipinos are just plain lazy and lacks common sense in managing their waste. Just like this mother-and-son tandem who recently went viral on social media after being caught throwing tons of trash and letting it flow through the flood water.

The video which is now all over the internet is said to be taken from CCTV footage of Barangay 69 Caloocan City. The 1-minute video shows how 65-years-old Elena Paras threw a sack and at least seven plastic bags full of trash in the middle of the street while it is flooded in water after a heavy downpour last Tuesday.
After a few seconds, Elena’s son, 18-year-old Ian could also be seen dumping garbage from a drum inside their house. The mother-and-son did it in the most casual way as if they have done it regularly.
The video immediately went viral after the neighboring Barangay 67 uploaded it on social media.
“Nakita namin na ganoon ang nangyari, pinaanod sa baha ang basura. Hindi naman dapat ginagawa ng isang tao ‘yon,” Barangay 67 Kagawad Edgar Martin said.
“Ang pagtatapon ng basura ay pagmumulan talaga ‘yan ng baha. Reklamo tayo nang reklamo, tapos sa sarili natin, pasaway naman tayo,” he added.

Because this, Barangay 69 Chairperson Janette Manlapig called the attention of the mother-and-daughter last Thursday to give them necessary sanction.
Elena and Ian are now subjected to pay P1,000 penalty and has to undergo at least 15 days community service and seminar after violation one of Caloocan City’s ordinance and the Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
In defense, the mother-and-son tandem explained that the flood reached inside their house so they decided to just let the trash flow outside, a decision they later on regret.
“Hindi po namin gagawin ulit. Tutulong na po ako sa paglilinis ng kanal namin,” Elena said.
“Humihingi kami ng kapatawaran sa mga nagalit sa amin sa nag-viral na video,” Ian added.
